Civil Rights Act of 1957 is adopted in Washington, D.C.

Signed by President Dwight Eisenhower, it is the first civil rights bill passed by Congress since Reconstruction, it was approved by the Senate on August 29, 1957, but only after Sen. Strom Thurmond (D-S.C.) ended a 24-hour filibuster.
